Kawawa naman...
FOR THE teeny weeny sum of 50
cents, 2nd Lt.
Rolly Joaquin lost his chance of becoming the
Armed Forces chief of staff about 30 years from
now.
Joaquin, the valedictorian of Philippine Military
Academy Class of 2004, was caught shoplifting at
a US Army commissary inside Fort Benning,
Georgia. He was in there for the basic infantry
course in preparation for a job in the Philippine
Army, and as part of his award for graduating at
the top of his class.
Joaquin was caught removing a 50-cent discount
tag from one compact disc (CD) and placing it in
another CD costing $12.
For a measly P28 (at the current rate of about
P56 to the dollar), Joaquin will surely be kicked
out of the service for bringing disgrace to the
country, in general, and the Philippine military, in
particular. The government has lost a bright officer
who, when he delivered a valedictory address at
the PMA early this year said that the P2.1 million
spent on each cadet "will not be wasted."
What went wrong with Joaquin who was taught
the PMA honor code that requires a cadet not to
cheat or lie and to report a fellow cadet that he
knows has cheated or lied? Joaquin is probably
the only fresh PMA graduate who cheated or lied.
Those who became delinquent later were
influenced by graft and corruption in the real world.
If Joaquin, supposedly a model cadet because he
was No. 1 in his class, could cheat in a relatively
honest environment in the US Army, how could we
trust his classmates? Perhaps the PMA honor
code needs a boost. The school should take a
second, hard look at the cadet's honor code and
introduce changes.
Perhaps the premier military institution needs to
take in more cadets who come from middle and
upper class families who are steeped in moral
values and good breeding so they can influence
other cadets. Right now, a big percentage of PMA
cadets come from families whose offspring don't
have breeding. I once observed a PMAyer who
wiped his wet hands on the seams of his pants.
Good breeding is not learned in school but at
home.
Many middle and upper class families don't want
their sons to study at the PMA because of the
dehumanizing discipline that cadets there
undergo.

isang kawal Pilipino...
BUO PARIN ANG LOOB NAMIN DITO AT HINDI
